Charles Oehrtmann – better known as “Mr. O” – has been teaching music in the public schools for over 30 years, arriving on the scene in Windham in 1999. He has taught orchestra, chorus, and is currently the general music teacher at Manchester School and is one of the general music teachers at the Primary School. Music is his passion, and he firmly believes that every student can benefit from a connection with music, be it as a casual listener or as a dedicated performer.
He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Rowan College in New Jersey, where he played trombone. In his sophomore year, he discovered the joy of cello playing and has been hooked ever since. He currently performs with the Midcoast Symphony where he sits principal bass. His past experiences include performances with the Choral Art Society of New Jersey, as well as the Choral Art Society in Portland. He is an active free-lance musician, and has also served on the Executive Board of the Maine Music Educators’ Association, serving as All-State Orchestra manager for six years.
In his spare time, Mr. O loves to tend his extensive garden, which he and his wife, Deirdre, have established over the course of several years.
